VAR *Very audible racism
28th Feb & 1st March
It’s summer 2021, and the Euros are finally here—in England, no less. For Vince and his football-obsessed friends, it’s four glorious weeks of the beautiful game—a dream that once felt impossible after the earth-shattering events of 2020. But as England's tournament gathers steam, Vince finds himself juggling more than match schedules. His friendships, relationships, and identity as a Black England fan come under intense scrutiny, forcing him to confront hard truths about race, responsibility, belonging, and football’s darker side.
VAR (Very Audible Racism) is an electrifying one-man play inspired by the writer’s experiences during England’s run to the Euro 2020 final. Capturing the intensity of following the beautiful game, it offers a sharp lens on race, identity, and the personal becoming political. Ingeniously blending humour, heartbreak, and high stakes, VAR uses football as a microcosm for broader societal challenges. Bold, inventive, and deeply human, it’s a story of friendship, resilience, and the fight for inclusion—essential viewing for anyone who’s ever loved the game or questioned its cost.
Written & Directed by Isaac Asha Tomiczek
Premiering at FreshFest, the play was runner-up for the 2022 Ambassador Theatre Group Playwright’s Prize in association with Platform Presents.
